Lap Shear Test
Lap shear tests are used to mimic real-life loading conditions on solder joints and also for characterization of various adhesives used in electronic assemblies. Although no specific standards are defined to conduct lap shear tests for solder alloys, the ASTM standards that are defined for testing adhesives can be used for reference. The test helps manufacturers characterize various solder alloys such as SAC alloys Sn3.5Ag0.7Cu and Sn3.9Ag0.6Cu recommended by the International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative and other adhesive materials used for interconnection and bonding applications.
This technique uses two specimens, such as copper plates with the same dimensions, which are bonded together using adhesives like solder paste, surface mount adhesive glue, or UV cured glue. The specimen is then subjected to a single-lap shear test by application of tensile force until shear occurs.
- Proper gripping for lap shear testing
- Real-time data to determine failure locations
- Various gripping techniques from manual wedge grips to pneumatic side acting grips are available to align and hold the specimen.
- The TestCam Module and camera for Bluehill® Universal can be used to record high-speed videos and pictures while the lap shear test is being performed. This enables the users to qualitatively analyze the shearing of a specimen at the joint which is bonded with adhesive.
